Lakota East Football suffered its first loss of the 2025 season Friday night, falling 40–35 in a thrilling GMC matchup at Mason.

The night began on a tough note for the Thunderhawks, as an early safety at the 2:18 mark of the first quarter gave Mason a quick 2–0 lead. The Comets added a long touchdown run moments later to extend their advantage.

East regrouped in the second quarter, led by sophomore quarterback Nile Knutson, who had a career night. Knutson completed 27 of 29 passes for 338 yards and three touchdowns, setting a new all-time Lakota East single-game passing record, surpassing Jamison Kitna’s 310-yard mark from last season versus Moeller. Knutson’s scoring passes included a 6-yard strike to Christopher Bouyer and a 4-yard connection later in the third quarter.

Adding to the historic night, senior running back Ryder Hooks rushed for 131 yards, becoming Lakota East’s all-time career rushing leader, surpassing Jay Boyd’s 1995–97 record. Hooks also scored a 15-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to briefly put the Thunderhawks ahead 29–26.

Despite these record-breaking individual efforts, Mason responded with three straight touchdowns from running back De’Angelo Birch, who finished with four scores on the night. East kept the game alive with a late 28-yard touchdown pass from Knutson to Patrick MacFarlane, but the comeback effort fell short.

Despite the 40–35 loss, the Thunderhawks showcased tremendous offensive firepower. Knutson’s near-perfect passing, Bouyer’s two touchdown receptions, and Hooks’s record-setting rushing performance highlighted a balanced and resilient attack against a tough Mason squad.

Lakota East (2–1, 1–1 GMC) will look to bounce back next Friday when they return home to face Hamilton.
