Lakota East High School has announced the return of a familiar and accomplished leader, as Nikki Drew has been named head coach of the Thunderhawks’ girls basketball program (pending BOE approval). Drew replaces Dan Wallace, who recently accepted an Assistant Athletic Director position at Mercy-McAuley.

“I’m incredibly excited to return as the basketball coach at Lakota East, a place that already means so much to me,” said Drew. “Dan and his staff did an amazing job. The timing is right, and I’m excited to keep things moving in the right direction.”

Drew returns to a program she helped elevate during her previous tenure from 2009–2013, compiling a 55-40 record over four seasons. Her teams reached the regional finals in 2010-11 during a standout 19-6 campaign, and she was named Butler County Coach of the Year in 2013. Known for building strong team culture, Drew has consistently emphasized the development of well-rounded student-athletes.

“My goal is to develop student-athletes by teaching fundamental skills while fostering teamwork, discipline, confidence, and a strong work ethic in a competitive and supportive environment,” Drew added.

Drew currently serves as a Sports Medicine and Exercise Science Instructor with Butler Tech at Lakota East and Cincinnati State, where she has been a leader in education since 2012. Her background includes certifications as an ACE Personal Trainer and AMCA Physical Therapy Technician Aide, along with extensive experience designing training and wellness programs.

Her coaching resume spans multiple levels, including AAU basketball and previous roles at Colerain High School as a varsity basketball and strength coach. At the collegiate level, she served as Director of Basketball Operations at Vanderbilt University, overseeing program logistics, recruiting coordination, and player development initiatives.

A former professional player in Germany and France, Drew brings high-level playing experience to the sidelines. She has been recognized with numerous honors, including induction into the Greater Cincinnati Basketball Hall of Fame (2023) and Xavier University Hall of Fame (2016), as well as Lakota East Teacher of the Year (2016) and Butler Tech Teacher of the Year (2019).

Drew holds a Master’s degree in Education from Xavier University, a Bachelor’s degree from Xavier, and a Career Technical Education License from The Ohio State University.

“We are thrilled to welcome Coach Drew back to lead our girls’ basketball program,” said Lakota East Athletic Director Jill Meiring. “She brings outstanding experience and a deep commitment to mentoring young women. Her leadership will have a tremendous impact on our student-athletes both on and off the court.”

Drew’s return signals an exciting new chapter for Lakota East girls’ basketball, grounded in tradition, excellence, and a continued focus on developing the total student-athlete.
