As redemption for last year’s mud run, the Lakota East Cross Country team ran a fast course in ideal conditions at Centerville’s Saturday Night Lights Meet.
All runners showcased strong races, with many of them starting their seasons on high notes.
Sophomores Rachel Turner and Avery Swann-Rodriguez led the girls 3200m with wonderful races. Sophomores Violet Funk, Gabby Reed-Webster, and Sophie Tenoever ran their races side by side, finishing close behind one another in 7th-9th place.
Another impressive race was seen in the girls open. Freshman Ava Kidd led the pack and secured an outstanding 16th place finish. Sophomore Isabel Grissom and junior Pari Patel showed admirable teamwork as they worked side by side and crossed the finish line together. Sophomore Lucy Ostermeyer also ran valiently and set a strong first PR.
The girls championship race thrived under the lights and with a gutsy showing, finishing 6th out of 17 teams, beating conference rival Mason for the first time since 2019. Senior Molly Deardorff ran a top-five finish followed closely by senior Ava Dickenson. Freshmen Alyssa Browne and Dorothy Specht both ran PRs, surpassing their times from last week’s pre-season invitational by considerable amounts. Lastly, senior Brooks Billingsley and junior Megan Hoffman didn’t let the intimidating competition keep them from running with commendable strength and finishing with strong season bests.
The team is back in action next Saturday morning at Hilliard Davidson High School for the Hilliard Hot Summer Bash.
